Good Lord....

Law enforcement officials were reviewing evidence yesterday and had not decided whether to file charges. Their preliminary account of the incident broadly matches that of the boy and his mother. The case presents exceedingly unusual circumstances: Rarely is a 12-year-old implicated in a homicide, and even less often does a child that age take a life to protect his mother. "In Maryland, there can be a legitimate defense of third parties in the event of a violent attack," State's Attorney Glenn F. Ivey said. "That is a possibility in this case."
What is WRONG with these people? The kid saved his mother's life-- what, was he supposed to kung-fu an adult man off of his mother? More boys that proved to be better men than the adults around them, here.

They aren't coming right out and saying it, but it looks to me like the police aren't sure they believe the story. I'll bet they are waiting for forensic evidence to come back before they commit themselves.

If you stab someone who is face down on his hands and knees as the article describes, it's a little hard to see how you slice an artery in the neck. Those arteries are protected by thick muscle from the back. I would guess that the most natural action for an untrained person would be to hold the knife point down and hammer downward on the guy's back with it. To slice the arteries, you have to hold the knife in a stabbing knife-fighter's grip (a move that isn't natural without training) or in a sword grip and come up from below where he would be able to block it if he saw it coming.

Frankly, I'm having a hard time visualizing how a 12-year-old did this.

That's about all I can figure, too, but then why specifically say that their investigations are supporting what the mother/child said?

If the kid held the knife like you would for chopping veggies and flailed at the guy's neck, that would explain why the guy lived long enough to die at the hospital-- also explain why it wasn't instantly clear to the woman how she got loose. Carotid artery injuries, if you're *lucky,* are deadly in-- what, five minutes, untreated? This guy got treatment in one or two minutes, and still lost five units of blood....

Figure the cops have the ungodly fast response time of five minutes, and that 911 was called instantly after the guy was cut. For the guy to physically attack the cops when they showed up, be restrained, gotten into an ambulance and to the hospital before dying, all without passing out (assuming carotid was nicked)... that's a pretty shallow cut.
If it was the external jugular, as shown here, that looks like it would work with the "hold the knife like a slasher film" style.

I'm in no way trained, but I could cut someone well enough for them to die in less than ambulance response time if I got a swing at their throat, and was trying to kill them. (I'm about the same weight and three inches shorter than the kid is described as being.)
