Someone Issued a Bible Re-Written For Political Purpose

...and this is news?

All my life, I've noticed that "Christian Book Stores" that have maybe one full translation of the Bible in stock will have a Baskin' Robin's worth of KJVs with matching "Chicken Soup For the Soul"-- "For Women," "For Students," "For Mothers," "For Those in Mourning." Not even going to touch the various let's-change-the-gender-God-used versions.

The Anchoress covers the story much better than I can, mostly because I'm still over here going "Hi, Church of England? King James Version was written for them? Dude wanted to get out of a marriage and possibly get the power that comes as the head of a church? How does that not count?"
(Interesting history side-note here, not fact-checked.)

How is it news that religion is powerful, and folks will try to use it for their own ends? It's a bit odd that such openly, callously applied ideology is on the right end of the spectrum, but that has more to do with more of the right-end taking such things seriously than the left-end. (Something I expect to change if the Church in the US doesn't get better, but that's another rant-- well, two, with the "'independent' means I can be a Dem but I'm special and a free thinker, now fall directly into line with me" tangent....)

Although I call myself a Christian, I have two problems with the Church.
1. If Victor and Dale want to get married, it does not destroy my marraige. Adultery, addiction, abuse, and divorce are far more distructive to marraige. Preaching against the gays doesn't empower the body of the church. They're not there listening anyway because they're not welcome. So who'ya preaching to? Also, if homosexuality were the most horrible sin, taking all of mankind down to the pits of hell, don't you think Jesus would have very specifically preached aginst it? He preached against hyporcrasy, and idolitry and putting "things" between man and his creator.

2. Creation Science. What a crock!!!! How can we bring bright young minds to know our creator when we deny the evidence of His creation. There is no conflict between science and scripture. From Pope John Paul to Rev. Micheal Dowd, there is nothing but harmony between the two. Only the church has defined the chasm. I had to take my children out of Sunday School when they started talking about dinasaurs on the ark.

Sorry for the rant. I am probably not regular enough to be allowed to rant, this strikes a chord with me.

I enjoyed the link.

1) the Church never said it would do so; pointing out the immorality of an action (from both scripture and natural law) doesn't mean you agree with everything anyone has ever said against it.
Never said it was the most horrible anything-- the most horrible sin would be sining against the Holy spirit, IE, thinking you did something so bad it's impossible for God to forgive ya.

2) Uh... that's protestant/evangelical, too, just like most of the prior one. Not Catholic. We're the ones with the monk-and-the-pea-plants learning the rules of heredity, Pope says basically "hey, if God wanted to use evolution to create humans, who am I to argue?"

No problem with rants, even out of left field, so long as I don't think they're...off, for lack of a better term.

Imo, they shoulda just let Henry VIII practice polygamy. That would've been more biblical than his divorce.

And I think evolution is bs.

Macro or micro evolution?

I mean, getting red Angus as a random mutation from black Angus is clearly fact-- getting a six legged cow, not so much.

The rules can't be just changed to make folks happy...as odd as that may seem to an American mindset....

Fair enough, obviously you aren't listening to the same preaching as us. Calvary needs to take the stick out of it's own eye prior to condeming the homos.

Second, I agree with the Catholic position on evolution theology. But the wave of "Calvary Chapel" theologians is creating a stumbling block for our youth.

Maybe I need to go to Mass. I was raised Lutheran, not too much of a stretch

Only Calvary churchs I know are the evangelical ones-- generally also get pissy about D&D....

Catholics have bad preachers like anyone else, but you might enjoy looking into the theology-- Jimmyakin.org has good stuff. (I only mention this because it seems a lot of the time, Protestants try a Catholic parish, don't like the preacher or manage to get a loopy Priest, and base it all off that... if there wasn't a bigger organization with binding teachings, that'd be fine, but oh well.)
