muses-- in the middle of a long map-of-consciousness post-- what did people day dream about before popular culture?
Stories.
I can be pretty sure about this because for the first ten or so years of my life, my main exposure to "popular culture" was one hour of Sesame Street a week-- max-- a few VHS westerns, some Disney tapes and stories. Fairy tales, retellings of Tolkien's stories, whatever-- that's what made our games go, and what I imagined when I daydreamed.
Anyone else got a go?

Great deeds, and having a pony of one's very own. :)
...you were a pygmy barbarian? ^.^
Oddly enough, I did have a pony....
(I don't remember him, but my folks inform me that a more vile-tempered, misbegotten hunk of flesh never walked this earth. The "retired" cow horse-- my godfather "asked us to watch him" when he was roughly 18-- was far superior.)
I never heard of Tolkien until I was in college, but my daydreams and much of my play were very Tolkienesque. I even drew maps and tried to make up a language.
Discovering Tolkien was bliss!
