B-Daddy Enlightened Me

I've never really understood the more organized opposition to WalMart.

I mean, I can understand the snooty opposition, and all that knee-jerk "it's crass" type stuff... but why the high level, spend a bunch of money to drive it out of places you don't go anyways stuff?

It can't be the "they destroy small businesses" thing-- most of the small businesses that crowd worries about aren't in conflict with Walmart, they're way too expensive.

(Saw this kabuki acted out next to where I grew up, in Chelan. It has more complications, but the simple version is that the rich folks who own vacation homes and the rich folks who own hobby shops were horrified that the folks who upkeep their houses, run the non-hobby shops and generally act as the servant class wouldn't have to drive to Wenatchee or Omak for their shopping.)

Well, B-Daddy points out:
So what's the damage from Walmart Supercenters? The real answer is that they threaten the one area where private sector unions still hold sway, grocery stores.

That sounds right.

The rest is here, but that snippet... it SOUNDS right.
