Another Proposal

"All drivers on public streets or highways must be licensed."

You know how bicycles are supposed to obey the rules of the road, and be treated as vehicles?  You know how they almost never do?

Know how a lot of froofroo cities have amazing, expensive bike paths...paid for out of road funds?

Two for one fix.

You're on the road, you're supposedly following the laws of the road, you should be licensed.

Kids (and unlicensed drivers) would be pedestrians, rather than vehicles-- stay out of the car part of the road or be ticketed.

Maybe some sort of bike license plate would be useful, or something that goes on a helmet, or just make it so cops can pull over folks riding bikes on the road who are being idiots and ticket them.

I've had several cops tell me there's just nothing they can do when bicyclists break the law.

There is precedent.

I like this idea, but I do worry about giving the government more things to tax/regulate...

OTOH, there was some college kid working for the Beavercreek Police Department as an intern, who hid behind a bush near a stop sign in the middle of a platte, in the middle of the day, and harassed the kids for bike "violations". (So the kids started staying away from wherever he went, apparently.)

He even tried to harass me, I guess because he couldn't tell I was considerably older than him, and said I'd have to tell him my parent's address. I gave him what for, since he had no authority to even harass kids like that on his own, and rode off. I'd never complained to the police department about anything in my life, but I complained about him as soon as I got home. Creep.

They're already regulated-- there's just no enforcement. Bicycles are to follow the vehicle laws if they're on the road...they just don't, and nothing's done about it.

SB-
The SOB that was abusing his non-existent authority shouldn't be anywhere NEAR police work, though!

I dunno, bicyclists who break the law usually end up severely injured...

Not around here. The only injury I know of was the guy with his daughter, and that poor SOB was properly off his bike, walking across the crosswalk.
