Different Views

are no good if you haven't got a window.

Fake-traditional proverb that bubbled up from my musing on the growing-more-common pop wisdom about how we need to seek out views that we disagree with online.  Basically, it doesn't matter if you agree or disagree with someone's point of view if you don't share, in some way, their world view.

What is the point in a Catholic arguing abortion with someone who thinks humans are just animals and thus another human's life is worth no more than his dog's?

Sometimes the road one chooses is more important than the shoes one wears-- no amount of walking in another's shoes will get you to a destination that's on a different path.

I love the new take on the old saying:

Before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes. That way, when you criticize them, you're a mile away and you have their shoes.

Can't remember if you're a trekkie-- ever hear Garak's lesson from the boy who cried wolf? Never tell the same lie twice.

Yeah, some agreement on basic principles might be necessary. On the other hand, what's the point of arguing with an animal?

I don't know, I've had pretty good luck arguing with our cats... it's all in how you say it. ;^p

(Yes, our boys are a disgrace to catkind, and blend the best aspects of dogs with the best aspects of cats...although they also drool....)

This is a great post and applies to the Wall Street protesters as well. Why ask them what they want? They're so far removed from reality that there really isn't any hope for an intelligent conversation.
